Summer Nostalgia

Heather sets a colorful summer table.

Summer backyard barbeques are a favorite for my family and bring back fond memories of doing the same as a child.  I wanted this table to reflect those nostalgic thoughts.  I started by cutting sweet smelling honeysuckle, feverfew, daisies, Missouri primrose, Annabelle hydrangea and dusty miller.  These yellow, white and green flowers inspired the fresh palette.   I placed these loosely in collected bottles, cups and vases I had found recently at estate sales and gathered them on top of a cake plate.  I also added in some hand-made windmills from paper in yellow gingham prints.  How can you not look at these and smile while using all of your breath to make them spin!

Another great estate sale find were these bright yellow French dishes. Add silverware wrapped in a fabric napkin and tied with grosgrain ribbon.  These can be created by cutting inexpensive fabric or old tablecloths, past repair, into 10” x 10” squares.  No need to sew!

Start the grill and create some new memories!

A few tips for successful outdoor entertaining:

*Label popsicle sticks with meat temperatures so guests can pick burgers or steaks at the desired degree of doneness.

*To keep cold items cold, place the serving bowl in a slightly larger bowl filled with ice.

*Use clothespins clipped to the edges of tablecloths to keep them from flying away in the wind.

*Stock a pail or basket with outdoor summer essentials such as bug spray, sun screen and band aids.  The convenience will be appreciated.

*Place mason jars with votive candles around the yard.  The subtle lighting will add ambiance without a lot of heat.
